Is this Mitsubishi Evo Tommi Makinen Edition worth $250,000?
If there’s a ‘sleeper’ in the Japanese performance car market pack — a car that’s quietly rising in value with limited acknowledgement — it’s probably the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. And, if there’s one in particular leading the charge, it’s the Evolution 6.5 Tommi Makinen Edition.
Created as an homage to the 1990s and early 2000s World Rally Championship hero (now ironically working for Toyota), just 2500 examples of the ‘TME’ were produced for all markets around the world. They’re surprisingly common in New Zealand, and rare as rocking horse you-know-what elsewhere.
NZ Autocar has already documented one incredible example of the breed this year; a former Mitsubishi UK–owned TME with just 16,500km on the odometer. It sold for almost $200,000 in May.
Now, another spotless TME has surfaced for sale in the UK — this one sporting an even more interesting heritage. For one, its mileage is almost the same, with 11,000 miles (17,702km) indicated. It’s the same spec too, finished in Passion Red.
The kicker, though, is that it’s serial number 001 out of 050 in this colour that were initially distributed in the UK. According to auctioneers Silverstone Auctions, this detail makes this car particularly sought after.
It expects the 001 TME to sell at auction for between £115,000–£125,000. That’s a jaw-dropping $197,000–$247,000 approximate forecasted price. For a Mitsubishi Lancer. The auction takes place this weekend.
“This very special car has covered a fully verifiable 11,000 miles from new, supported by MOT and service records. It has had just two owners, the last since 2003. The car was previously lightly modified cosmetically under the bonnet, which has now all be rectified and returned to standard specification,” says Silverstone Auctions.
“The underside has been sympathetically detailed, not restored, with ‘factory’ grey underseal still remaining (this was applied to all UK cars by Ralliart).
“The car is accompanied by a large history file, with many receipts, plus its original and complete book-pack (including service schedule - see images). The car has just had a full cam-belt service (and a full MOT) as part of its recommissioning.”
The price war on Evolution 6.5 TMEs isn’t just in the UK, either. Prices are booming in New Zealand, too. Two examples are currently listed on auction site TradeMe; both white, and both based in Auckland.
One with just over 100,000km on the clock is priced at $89,990, while the other with 64,000km on the clock is $99,990.
