Triumph's speedy twin refreshed for 2021

Launched in 2018, the Speed Twin was a big step up on the Street Twin, and was essentially an upright version of the Thruxton, packing the high performance 1200cc parallel twin. Now it has been updated across the board, with a stronger, cleaner engine, among other things.

The twin is now Euro 5 compliant and has a touch more peak power, out to 100PS even (99hp/74kW), with added midrange torque. The peak of 112Nm arrives 500rpm lower down too (4250rpm).

New lightweight engine components increase the responsiveness of the mill, the redline set 500rpm higher than before. Stylish brushed stainless steel megaphones impart a more impactful noise. Moreover, the first major service interval isn’t until 16,000 kilometres.

Suspension is upgraded too. New 43mm USD Marzocchi forks help make the Speed Twin more agile while higher spec Brembo four-piston M50 radial-mount monoblocs and twin 320mm discs improve stopping power.

The new components evidently give stronger initial braking bite, added feel and better fade resistance. Not that we found the old stoppers wanting.

Adding to both handling and braking are new Metzeler Racetec RR tyres fitted as standard to new lightweight 12-spoke cast wheels.

For ease of riding the seat height is set at 809mm and there are tapered bars, the pegs are positioned 38mm further forward and 4mm lower than those on the Thruxton, for a more relaxed riding position.

The three riding modes, Rain, Road and Sport, have been updated for 2021, and can be changed on the move. TC can also be switched off. A daytime running light is incorporated within the LED headlight.

Features include brushed aluminium front and rear mudguards with new mounts, new anodised headlamp mounts, Monza fuel cap and anodised aluminium swingarm.

New colours for 2021 include red, matte grey with yellow accents or black.

There are over 50 accessories available for customisation, including quilted seats and luggage, knee pads, and heated grips.

We'd imagine the updated Speed Twin will be here by year's end, and have asked the distributor for an expected arrival time.
