Pricing confirmed for New Zealand’s cheapest electric car
After first breaking cover last year with a series of cheap offerings, MG Motor New Zealand has confirmed the official starting price for its ZS EV compact crossover.
The ZS EV was initially available for $49,990 (plus on-road costs) as a promotional pre-order price for the first 50 orders. When those sold out, the order price was bumped to $50,100. Now, with deliveries commencing in December, the retail price of $55,990 has been announced. A seven year/130,000km new vehicle and battery warranty is included.
While it represents a bit of a price rise, the announcement makes the ZS EV the cheapest electric car on sale in New Zealand, ahead of the $57,488 LDV EV80 and the $59,990 Nissan Leaf and Hyundai Ioniq.
“MG ZS EV is the most exciting product to join our rapidly expanding portfolio,” said MG Motor New Zealand’s Anthony MacLean.
“Kiwi’s love SUV’s and so it is important to offer an affordable SUV that is also electric. Some customers put down a deposit 12 months ago; that is a testament to their foresightedness and patience.
“ZS EV is the first truly family friendly EV on the market. I think it will quickly win over the passionate EV community and will make great strides in converting more New Zealanders to become EV fans.”
For their money, ZS EV buyers get a 44.5kWh lithium-ion battery and a powertrain capable of producing 105kW of power, 353Nm of torque, and a WLTP range of 262km per charge. There are three drive modes (Eco, Normal, and Sport) and a 50kW charging point will be able to charge the MG from nil to 80 per cent in 40 minutes.
The ZS also comes with the brand’s comprehensive MG Pilot, one of the most feature-packed suites of safety technology in class. It includes autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, speed sign recognition, and more.
MG Motor New Zealand confirmed that, so far, 120 orders have been placed for its new EV. Not bad given the brand is in its infancy.
