Non-truck owners prefer Cybertruck over electric F-150, study finds
An interesting new study has surfaced, which asked responders about their preferred electric truck. They were given the choice of Tesla’s Cybertruck, the Rivian R1T, Ford’s electric F-150 or GM’s as-yet-unnamed electric truck. Despite its divisive look and rocky debut, Tesla’s offering topped the charts but only for those who don’t currently own a truck.
According to the survey by Autolist, GM took the lead with 29 per cent of votes, a strange result given how well Ford’s F series sells, with the Blue Oval trailing at 27 per cent. Rivian slotted in third with 24 per cent and Tesla rounded out the group with 20 per cent.
However, 25.8 per cent of non-truck owners voted for the Cybertruck and 24.8 per cent voted for the Rivian. Interesting, compared to Ford and GM’s 24.7 per cent apiece.
But if you look at current or past truck owners, they prefer tradition over disruption. Thirty-five per cent supported GM and 28 per cent went with Ford. Rivian stayed close with 23 per cent, which could be down to the fact Ford invested big money into the startup. Tesla earned the fewest votes at 14 percent.
As to demographics, the younger the voter, the more likely they were to vote for Tesla. That’s good for Tesla, as it’s not uncommon to see automakers attempting to entice younger buyers, but less of a win when you consider the 18-28 age group is rarely capable of affording such expensive vehicles. Ford came in second with the age group, followed by Rivian, then GM.
Meanwhile, 29 to 35-year-olds and 46 to 55-year-olds rated Rivian top, then GM, Ford, and Tesla. All other age groups preferred GM, Ford, Rivian, and Tesla.
