Benz’s new GLA will soon be here with the four-model line-up starting at $73,300. That’s for the front-drive GLA 200.

The new GLA looks bigger than its predecessor but is actually 12mm shorter. However, it has increased in height to emphasise its SUV intentions. At 1616mm, it stands 122mm taller than the old one, giving it greater on-road presence. It also lends itself to a higher seating position that SUV people crave and therefore increased leg room for both front and rear passengers, or so say the tech-heads from Mercedes-Benz. They reckon that the GLA is ‘positioned as the sporty brother to the GLB, a lifestyle-oriented SUV’. It has all the usual SUV styling hallmarks, with an upright stance, short overhangs and protective cladding.

The GLA 200 is powered by a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder turbopetrol making 120kW and 250Nm. That output is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed twin-clutch auto. The interior is trimmed in Merc’s faux leather dubbed Artico, there’s a powered tailgate, climate air con, and the MBUX infotainment system features extended voice control and is compatible with both Apple and Android. Also present is sat nav, a reversing camera, a wireless charge pad, various drive modes, 64-colour ambient lighting, rain-sensing wipers, self parking, and LED lights. Safety kit includes AEB, blind spot monitoring with exit warning assistant (which alerts the driver to approaching cyclists or vehicles if the door begins to open into their path) and there is active lane keeping and traffic sign recognition.

The 250 features AWD and starts at $86,500. It is powered by a 2.0-litre turbopetrol with 165kW and 350Nm while it uses an eight-speed twin-clutch box. This model gains a panoramic sunroof, heated electric front seats, variable ratio steering, and remote engine start via the Mercedes me Connect app.

There are two AMG options starting with the 35 at $99,990. It’s 2.0-litre engine is massaged to produce 225kW and 400Nm while the gearbox, suspension, brakes and exhaust systems have all been optimised for sports driving.

The ultimate GLA is the AMG 45 S with 310kW and 500Nm and this model comes in for further dynamic enhancements to help justify its $126,400 price tag.

The GLA 200 and GLA 250 will be on sale from August, while the Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 will be available late in Q3, and you can expect the 45 in Q4.
