Ford New Zealand has issued a voluntary recall for vehicles fitted with Takata airbags, and not just those fitted with the potentially deadly Alpha units.

Affected models are:

- Certain 2004-2006 model year Econovan vehicles.

- Certain 2004-2006 model year Courier vehicles.

- Certain 2004-2011 model year Ranger vehicles. This does not include the current Ford Ranger, says Ford New Zealand, as Ranger models made after MY11 are equipped with inflators from Autoliv and TRW.

"Dealers will replace the driver and front passenger affected Takata inflator or the entire airbag module at no cost to the customer," said Ford in a statement.

Ford NZ will be in contact with affected owners directly over the next two weeks. Around 12,794 vehicles are affected.
