BMW has revealed the Concept 4 at the Frankfurt show, featuring a pair of huge nostrils up front. In profile it’s a stunner.

The car is a preview of future 4 Series, M3, and M4 models. The narrow headlights, proportions and slim mirrors give the car strong sporting intent but that grille is a bit much of a good thing, we feel. BMW says it’s inspired by models like the 328 and 3.0 CSi but really? However, this is just a concept so is out there to invite comment and obviously is also subject to change prior to production.

"The kidney grille has always been a signature feature of BMW cars," said Domagoj Dukec, BMW's head of design. "The BMW Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range."

Two air intakes signify that whatever’s powering this concept isn’t electric and needs plenty of oxygen to survive. For reference, we already know the next-gen M3 and M4 will use the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six found in the X3 and X4 M.

The chunky 21-inch wheels look great, although probably won’t make it to production, and the rear end looks more 8 Series than anything else, which is no bad thing.

There isn’t much else to say about the concept at this stage. Likely as not BMW will tone down the grille for production.
