BMW confirms local 1 Series pricing
BMW has released Kiwi pricing for the new front-wheel drive 1 Series.
Local buyers will have a choice of two models, the 118i and the M135i xDrive. The former also comes in two versions, a Sport Line Edition and an M Sport variant.
The lesser of the two gets a 1.5-litre turbocharged triple making 103kW and 220Nm, allowing for an 8.5 second 0-100km/h run. At the other extreme, the M135i uses BMW’s most powerful four-pot ever built, offering 225kW and 450 units of twist. Thanks to xDrive, the hatch can crack 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. This is also the first time a 1 Series has been offered in NZ with all-wheel drive.
Performance is helped by the debut in a combustion car of actuator contiguous wheel slip limitation (ARB) technology. Both models get ARB, which improves traction by controlling wheel slip more sensitively than before. According to the manufacturer, “ARB technology employs a slip controller positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system. This eliminates long signal paths and relays information three times faster, while the driver perceives wheel slip being brought under control approximately ten times faster.”
The new 1 Series is 5mm shorter than before but 34mm wider and 13mm taller. This translates to more interior space. It’s also lighter, with BMW claiming a 30kg weight loss thanks to a new platform and the additional use of lightweight materials.
Added standard features include a head-up display, lane change warning and a reversing assistant. Buyers also get BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional and wireless smartphone charging fitted as standard.
The 118i Sport Line Edition starts the range at $49,990, with the 118i M Sport following at $53,900. The M135i xDrive costs $83,500. All prices exclude on-roads but include a five-year warranty, three-year service inclusive programme and five-year roadside assist coverage.
