Biosecurity NZ has stepped up its efforts to keep out the brown marmorated stinkbug.

Biosecurity NZ has stepped up its efforts to keep out the brown marmorated stinkbug.

New rules have been announced to try and keep the stinkbug from establishing itself here, which commence on September 1 and will run until April 30, 2020.

The rules involve increasing the list of countries that require treatment of imported vehicles, machinery, and parts before they arrive in New Zealand from 17 to 33. All treatment of vehicle-related cargo will need to be treated offshore, including sea containers.

Should the stinkbug settle here, it’s estimated that within 10 years, total horticultural export values - considering both volume and price impacts - could fall by between $1.4 billion and $3 billion.

Last year, stinkbugs were found on cargo ships importing cars, resulting in the ships being turned away.
